SUMMARY

Responsible for guiding and directing a team of engineers and designers developing solutions for Customers and Suppliers. Define project requirements, goals, scope, tasks, and timelines. Create design solutions that utilize commonality to reduce proliferation, utilize Lean / 6 Sigma techniques and methodologies.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Embrace and support Utilimaster Corporate policies and procedures
  • Take ownership of cost, weight, investment, complexity and lead time of Utilimaster products.
  • Conduct design reviews and facilitate communications between departments for customer specific designs.
  • Organize, direct and assign work requirements to engineers and designers in the creation and maintenance of drawings and bill of materials in assigned vehicle segments.
  • Communicate engineering solutions and revisions to other parts of the organization via component drawings, assembly and installation drawings, ECN, and other means as required.
  • Create and maintain design standards and guidelines for components / assemblies within scope of responsibility as directed by the engineering design assembly policy.
  • Provide technical support when needed to other departments such as service, warranty and quality.
  • Represent Utilimaster Engineering to customers and suppliers in site visits and customer pilot reviews.
  • Provide design solutions that exceed customer expectations for quality, cost, performance and timing.
  • Participate and support departmental projects aimed at reducing product cost and complexity.
  • Provide assistance to manufacturing in resolving assembly and fabrication issues related to design activities within scope of responsibility.
  • Review and approve completed drawings, designs and ECN; ensuring they are complaint with regulatory standards and requirements, Utilimaster lean checklist and engineering documentation standards.
  • Provide opportunities for increasing Skills, Knowledge and Abilities of the team, tracking results with use of the engineering department skill matrix.
  • Take ownership of management objectives, including managing direct and 3rd party staff to minimize engineering project lead time
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for direct reports following established guidelines and forms.
  • Be able to represent Utilimaster Engineering in litigation cases requiring subject matter experts.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent.
  • Minimum 7 years' experience in new product development
  • 5 years' experience in engineering project management working in a design environment utilizing Solid Works.
  • Experience working with FMEA, FEA, CFD, Lean/Sigma and DFSS tools are a definite plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other database management tools.
  • Minimum 2 years management or supervision of engineering staff of 4-5 people. Technical leadership of cross-functional project teams.
