Job Description: L3Harris Acoustic Systems - Integrated Systems in Herndon, VA is seeking a Lead, Systems Engineer to join our organization. Integrated Systems is a leading provider of advanced sonar signal processing solutions for the US Navy. As an experienced Systems Engineer you will develop and lead Undersea electronic solutions for high-level customer needs. These systems involve research and development activities involving undersea and surface maritime products including Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (UUV) payloads and sensor packages.
The ideal candidate will have a background in Maritime Systems, though any candidate with Systems Engineering experience and a strong technical background will be considered. The key elements of this position include enforcing top down System Engineering processes and procedures for current and future contracts, aggregating top-level requirements from multiple sources, consolidating and developing a technical solution working with SMEs, and allocating and tracking those requirements to lower level subsystems and components for test and verification. The candidate will lead an integrated product team (IPT) with customer and Government participation and will serve as the key Systems Engineering technical interface working alongside the project engineer.
In this role, you will be part of a small team of highly capable engineers and scientists providing advanced undersea solutions to the US Navy and other business partners and customers. You will mature these solutions through the Engineering life cycle with a focus on requirements, implementation, testing and integration using established processes and procedures. You will routinely interact with industry partners as we work together to develop advanced solutions for real-world problems.
Qualified candidates will demonstrate proficiency in each of these areas or show equivalent related experience:
Close and direct customer interaction and the ability to contribute to/and architect solutions.
Experience the full design cycle from proposal to design field-testing and installations.
Work with program management and senior leadership to see and understand the financial performance of the program and overall business.
Maintain Systems Engineering processes and procedures flowed down by corporate.
Lead development projects involving circuits, embedded systems/software, mechanical design, system of systems and high-level system design working independently and in a group environment across multiple L3Harris sites.
As Lead Systems Engineer, chair project meetings to manage systems project progress including project TPMs, SW metrics, Risk Management, project schedules and budgets.
Work closely with customer, engineering, program management, and business development to perform requirements analysis and high level conceptual and detailed design of systems involving marine sensing, undersea vehicles & payloads, data acquisition, telemetry, analysis and tracking solutions.
Lead Systems Engineering detailed design efforts both individually and in a group using analysis, Model Based System Engineering (MBSE), and prototype test tools.
Lead, and contribute significantly to Systems Engineering scope in proposal efforts.
Enforce and maintain System Engineering processes and procedures flowed down from L3Harris corporate.
A Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline, Master's degree in Systems Engineering desired
At least 9 years of experience in Systems Engineering/Architect position on Defense programs or a Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience.
Design and implementation experience of scaling company processes and procedures to align with each project
Proficient in the use requirements management tools such as DOORS and development of related document type macros.
Proficient in the use of MBSE tools such as Cameo (Magic Draw) or similar.
Strong writing and presentation skills are required.
Proficient in Microsoft Office products, including MS Project.
US Citizenship required.
Ability to obtain US Government Secret security clearance.
Willingness to travel up to 10% of time.
Preferred Additional Skills:
Experience with Artificial Intelligence, Modeling and Simulation is a plus.
Technical knowledge in design and control of unmanned undersea systems.
Ability to allocate customer requirements to hardware and software components.
Contribute to the architecture and design of embedded software systems.
Requires the ability to interpret and communicate engineering plans and specifications (Sound knowledge of engineering theory and design criteria).
Ability to write a concise reports of findings.
Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to work harmoniously in a team environment with government customers and other contractors.
Ability to negotiate solutions among functional groups (Systems Engineering, Mission Engineering, Software Engineering, etc.)
Outstanding work ethic and commitment to organizational success.
Proven analytical and troubleshooting skills demonstrated by related work experience.
